Zip line off to a flying start

Patricia Minnis, wife of Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis, was one of the first brave persons to try out the zip line at Pirate’s Cove Zip Line & Water Park during an opening ceremony on Saturday, February 3. Mrs Minnis successfully zipped on the 30ft line and she set the stage for others to try. Deputy Prime Minister Peter Turnquest followed, choosing to take the 50ft line where he waved to the crowd as he zipped by. Photos: Lisa Davis/BIS

A zip line has been opened at the Pirate's Cove Water Park at Taino Beach on Saturday in Grand Bahama and plans are to open a similar adventure park in New Providence.

Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis and his wife Patricia Minnis; Deputy Prime Minister Peter Turnquest, Minister of State for Grand Bahama Senator Kwasi Thompso, and Travis Robinson, parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Tourism attended the official opening.

During his address, Dr Minnis repeated recent statements that his government is working hard on a deal for the reopening of hotels on the Lucaya strip.

Pirate's Cove Water Theme Park opened its doors in June 2016. The installation of the zip line completes the second phase of the adventure park. A group of 11 Bahamian investors got together investing some $1.5m into the business.

Former Free National Movement MP David Wallace, one of the investors, announced plans are underway to build a zip line and water park in New Providence, and requested exemptions on costly materials for the park. Some 30 people are employed at the Pirate's Cove. The zip line and towers were constructed by High Extreme Adventure Tours (HEAT) from Jamaica. The poles are some 75ft tall.

At the park, there are also three eateries, a bar, water sports, Segway rides, snorkelling and a beach massage service.

The prime minister said he was pleased the business is 100 percent Bahamian owned and employing some 30 Bahamians.

He pledged his government will do what it can to ensure the park is successful.

This is great news for Freeport, that will immediately increase visitor spend! A much-needed step in the right direction that should be duplicated in all the family islands.

A zip line from the south side of the fort to the beach by Arawak Cay. That was you get to see the fort from above and then a view into the harbor.
