VOLLEYBALL

NPVA FINALS

THE New Providence Volleyball Association is slated to begin its championship series at the DW Davis Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

In the ladies’ opener at 7:30pm, the Lady Defenders will play the Scottsdale Vixens, while the men’s series will be played between the Defenders and the National Fencing Intruders.

Game two of the series will be played on Friday night at the same time with game three on Sunday, starting at 3:30pm.

Admission is $5 for adults. Food and drinks will be on sale.

BASKETBALL

FIBA AMERICAS

CAMP

FIBA Americas, in conjunction with the Caribbean Basketball Federation and the Bahamas Basketball Federation, will host its first in a series of training camps beginning in Nassau February 21-25 at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium.

The purpose of the training camp is to i) Identify young officials with the potential to become certified FIBA Referees under FIBA’s new licensing system for 2019, 2021 and 2023

ii) Increase the standard and quality of officiating at all levels.

The camp will be facilitated by former FIBA referee icon and FIBA Americas instructor Juan ‘Pocho’ Figueroa assisted by Freddie Brown and Messer’s Jorge and Roberto Vasquez, FIBA referees assigned to the FIBA World Cup Qualifier games.

• Initial timing for the camp are as follows:

Wednesday February 21 – 1830. Venue – National Stadium.

Thursday, 22nd – Sunday 25 February – 1000. Venue – National Stadium.

The camp is free of charge, however officiating material (manuals) will be available for purchase.

SOFTBALL

THE Masters Softball League continued its regular season action in the Southern Recreation Grounds at the Archdeacon William Thompson Softball Park over the weekend.

• Here’s a summary of

the games played:

Johnson Crusaders 20, BJ Giants 9: Steven Brown went 3-for-4 with five runs batted in (RBI) and Mario Ford was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the win.

Alfred Munnings was the winning pitcher and Paul Moss suffered the loss.

Dozer 16, Corner Boyz 14: Godfrey Willie was 4-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI.

Frank Martin was the winning pitcher and Gay Knowles was the loser.

Da Boyz 13, Doc Stallions 4: Kevin Dames was 3-for-5 with a RBI and Alvin Lightbourne was 3-for-4 with a RBI in the win.

Alvin Lightbourne helped his own cause in securing the win on the mound and Will Elliott suffered the loss.

Dozer 23, Tiki Hut 8: Ray Johnson was 3-for-5 with four RBI in the win.

Frank Martin got the win on the mound and Pat Rolle was tagged with the loss.

ELECTIONS

OUTGOING president Henry Dean said he won’t be seeking another term in office as president of the New Providence Softball Association.

The NPSA is scheduled to hold its annual general meeting and election of officers on Thursday, March 15.

The AGM will be held in the conference room in the Bankers’ Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.

The elections were originally scheduled for Thursday, March 8, but was postponed by a week.

It’s not known if any of the officers who served with him will be vying for any positions or who will run for president. The nominations will be taken from the floor before the elections take place.
