Worker cleaning cement mixer dies as it turns on

A MAN died in hospital shortly after being injured during an industrial accident at a hardware store, police said.

Shortly after 2pm Monday, two male employees of a block plant located at a hardware store on Wulff Road were cleaning the inside of a cement mixing machine when it was reported “it automatically turned on”, police said.

One of the men was seriously injured and taken to hospital by ambulance, where he later died.

Investigations are continuing.

Condolences to the family. Unfortunately until we as a nation either enforce the health and safety laws of the country or enact ones and then enforce them, these industrial accidents will continue to happen. Too often i have driven past construction sites and seen people 2-4 stories high with no safety equipment on, which is an accident waiting to happen.

Tragic. I hope that the company he was employed by had him in a pension plan, and life insurance. Also liability insurance to cover this type of situation. Ministry of Labour needs to insure his family is properly compensated and stay on top of this. Condolences to his family.

We have too many unsafe practices in the work place. It is allowed to go on by The Department of Labour. They have a unit that deals with it, but all they do is ride around all day and eat Breakfast and Lunch, and get FAT!!!

My condolences to the family of the workers involved in this tragic incident . Nowadays ,most businesses, such as the one concerned, should employ someone as a Safety Officer. What could have been done in that instance was to have a program where anytime entry into that machine is scheduled, the Officer has to be notified and he would then turn off the breaker and put a lock on it,tagging it" out of service" until the required maintenance is completed ,logging the names of workers involved , the time that they entered and exited, and performing a physical check, ensuring that nobody is inside, before unlocking the breaker and returning it back into service.Again my condolences to the families involved and i also pray for the employees who witnessed the tragic incident.
