A GRAND Bahama-based attorney yesterday suggested that "industry-targeted" education programmes be established 'in tandem' with the island's development of local industries.

Erica Paine, head of Graham Thompson's Grand Bahama office, while addressing the Grand Bahama Business Outlook said: "If we want to grow, increase the profitability, global profile and sustainability of our industries, while at the same time providing a broader base for economic development, it should be done in tandem with educational development on the island."

She added: "This is not just simply the general development of higher education, but rather the introduction of core, targeted programmes that are specifically tied to the economic development and sustainable growth of local industries.

"In order for such programmes to be identified there would initially need to be dialogue with existing community leaders to evaluate the challenges that they face, and the areas in which educational support would truly make a difference."

Mrs Paine added that the development of such programmes would not only be for the growth and support of industries, but also serve as a base for students - not only from Grand Bahama but around the world.

She said such an initiative could also help reverse the Bahamas' brain drain.

"The universal nature of this endeavour is critical both in terms of attracting critical mass and foreign investment, but also the springboard for the wider recognition of local industries and opportunities on the global marketplace," said Mrs Paine.
