NPBA: Rockets, Resistance in win column

THE Caro Contractors and the Rockets split their pair of games played on Monday might as the New Providence Basketball Association continued its regular season action at the AF Adderley Gymnasium.

The Caro Contractors Resistance won their division II opener with a 68-63 decision over the Rockets, while the Rockets returned the favor with a 74-62 victory over the Caro Contractors Pirates in the men's division one feature contest.

Here's a summary of the games played:

Rockets 74, Pirates 62: Eugene Bain led four players in double figures with 17 points in 27 minutes and 24 seconds as the Rockets knocked of Caro Contractors as he shot 6-for-16 from the field and 5-for-11 from the free throw line. Bain also had nine rebounds.

Barry Carter helped out with 12 points and 11 rebounds; Cordero Pinder came off the bench and finished with 11 points and seven rebounds and Dominique Beadle had 10 points and five rebounds.

The Rockets opened a 19-6 first quarter rout that they extended to 34-23 at the half. At the end of the third, they were up 51-35. The Pirates, however, went on a 27-23 spurt in the fourth to chip into the lead.

For Caro Contractors, Dominique Fernander scored 16 points in 34:29 minutes after he went 7-for-14 from the field and 2-for-5 from the foul line. Fernander also contributed seven rebounds and two assists.

Donathon Johnson added 14 points and eight rebounds and Tevin Hudson had 13 points and five rebounds.

The Pirates out-rebounded the Rockets 54-52, but they had 25 turnovers compared to just 11 by their opponents. The Rockets out-scored the Pirates 29-8 in points from turnovers; 46-30b in points in the paint; 18-14 in second chance points and 14-11 in fast break points.

The Pirates also held a 28-10 difference in bench points.

Resistance 68, Rockets 63: Kamal Murphy, in 32:51 minutes, canned 22 points as he connected on 7-for-17 from the field, 2-for-3 from the three-point line and 6-for-18 rom the charity stripe to lead Caro Contractors. Murphy also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Two other players were in double figures as Quemah Gibson had 15 points and seven rebounds and Comardo Seymour had 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and as many steals.

Bertrum Minns scored 23 points in 27:26 minutes on 7-for-19 from the field and 9-for-16 from the foul line with 11 rebounds to pace the Rockets.

Crispin Gibson was the only other player in double figures with 12 points and six rebounds. Latrell Hinsey had nine points, seven rebounds and four assists.

The Rockets surged to a 26-13 first quarter lead that they pushed to 36-26 at the half. The Resistance bounced back to use a 19-15 third quarter spurt to trim the deficit to 51-45. But in the fourth, Caro Contractors went on a 23-12 tear to secure the win.

The Resistance, who had a 12-17 difference in turnovers, out-scored the Rockets 19-14 in points from turnovers. They also had a 32-22 advantage in points in the paint and 13-9 in fast break points. Both teams were tied 14-14 in second chance points and 18-18 in bench points.

The Rockets, however, out-rebounded the Resistance 62-52.

The League will be back in action tonight with another double-header. In the 7 pm opener, the Breezes High Flyers will take on the Caro Contractors Resistance before the JD's Seafood Shockers face the Commonwealth Bank Giants.
