‘Abomination’ will scar City of Nassau

EDITOR, The Tribune.

TO my knowledge anyone wishing to develop property within the area between Church Street/St Mathews and at least to the west of Nassau Street are subject to a Special Architectural Nassau City Committee over and above the usual Town Planning Board who are required under their mandate to ensure the preservation of the traditional design and vernacular of the City within its precincts.

The design of the proposed Point Hotel and adjacent condos published today is to me a rape of the City of Nassau and indicates that what we knew as the City of Nassau traditionally is gone especially with the pending water front development of Nassau Harbour.

The word 'abomination' is appropriate as this design will scar the City of Nassau for a life time. It could not have a Bahamian Architect he/she would never design such ugliness.

The size of the project also has to be questioned.......Okay the Chinese built the parking garage but if every owner of one of the condos has two cars no one else will be able to find a spot to park! Traffic congestion on a difficult narrow corner....Who cares seems to be the justification.

Shame on the previous Government Christie & Co and shame on the Minnis Government - if they had care to ensure that the once acknowledged ambiance of our City at heart they surely could have persuaded the Chinese - China State Construction to redesign this ugliness to match the colonial design of the City.

What will come on the Nassau Harbour water front is obvious ...... there is nothing holding back now ugly design so inappropriate to the City.

So much for caring for Bahamian Heritage!

Mr. Moss - an interesting point. But do not only blame Christie or even Ingraham before him. Please also blame every single individual Bahamian who sets foot into a Chinese owned food store and/or liquor store and gives them money. That should not include Chinese food establishments because that is a cultural offering - BUT it should include those who sell alcohol as take-out.

Bahamians constantly give money to their enemies, and then wonder how come their enemies always seem to have more power than them in the ways of business and governance. The answer? Bahamians gave them the money. Their money. Our money. Keep buying from the Chinese (again, except for the non-alcohol take-aways, and the sit-down with alcohol) and see how that get you. We can already see.

The development now proposed for West End in Grand Bahama is a complete and utter joke. Reason? West End can no longer have an airport. The agreement which sold Hutchinson 50% of the Airport Company included a clause that no other airports can be built on the entire island of Grand Bahama (not just the Port area) without their consent. You think they will give it? No they will not "give" it. They will "sell" it though - and the price will be very very high.

The pirates have already sold us to the merchant ships. Any children you have today are being born in bondage.

Mad Hatter is profiling Chinese Bahamians who have been here for generations because of their ethnicity. They have nothing to do with China of today and are as Bahamian as I am - and possibly you. Those with the least claim cast the most blame!

No - that's why I specifically excluded those who operate their little take-out food places as normal - without liquor. And I excluded those who have sit down restaurants that serve liquor inside. It would be nice to give you examples - but I'm sure you are aware the libel laws in this country do not allow for that. There are indeed Chinese Bahamians in this country who do belong here and love our country as we do. I applaud them and support them by patronizing their businesses.

Basically in the world today, there is a lack of an instinct to survive. I would encourage anyone to study the current situation in Sweden. Basically - today - there is no more Sweden. It no longer exists. Only the dirt is left.

Why profile the Chinese when the banking industry aggressive lendings to over 4,000 mortgage or mostly joint loans some 8,000 Bahamians for some ONE BILLION DOLLARS default5ed loans, severely affecting growth, jobs etc Loans and lending policies need to be investogated and where aggressive lendings, marginal loans doomed to failure given then errant lrnders need to be punished. They need to be onvestigated for cash prizes, bonuses, trips, SUVs given out as prizes, salary kncreases etc. for giving out the most mortgage loans, marginal etc..... Instead we have a Regulator who sees nothing wrong with $16 chq cashing fee etc, been sued by of all people a bank who did not meet its teir ratios to operate, allowed then unregilated web shops to deposit money in banking system, and now is taking away banking functions from banks as CREDIT REFERENCE A FUNCTION BEST DONE BY BANKS HAVING ALL CREDIT HISTORY AND PART OF BANKING CLEARING SYSTEM, Banking innvestigations need to be done and if class action lawsuits are needed so be it. ABSOLUTELY PREPOSTEROUS TO BE ONLY BLAMING THE BAHAMIAN BORROWERS AS IF THEY WENT IN THE MORTGAGE BANKS AND MATHEMATICALLY CALCULATED THEIR OWM DEBT SERVICE RATIOS SAFETY MARGINS AND GAVE THE LOANS TO THEMSELVES WITH HIGH LIKELIHOOD TO FAIL,,!!

All true. However, the mortgages get too much attention due to their being involved in a person's dwelling place and the potential of people being "kicked out" of their homes. The real nastiness exists in the commercial lending sector. I'm currently duck taping my fingers so I cannot type any further and get in trouble.
