DAVID Charlton, founder and head coach of the Star Trackers Track Club, was honoured on Saturday with the Bahamian Icon Award for Youth Development.

In his acceptance speech, Charlton said just to be nominated with the talented list of competitors is an honour in itself. The Grand Bahamian native, who got his start in the sport as a 400/400 metres hurdler, credited his mentors, Anita Doherty, Errol Bodie and coach Moultrie for the impact that they all had on his life over the years.

However, Charlton said he would not have accomplished what he did without the team behind him, led by his wife Laura Charlton, who has been his inspiration. The two have worked hand-in-hand with the track club, which has helped to secure a number of athletic scholarships for its members over the years.

Together, they have produced three daughters, including Olympian Devynne Charlton, who have all excelled in the sport.

Charlton also thanked the members of his coaching staff, including Ferguson, Luther Rolle and Wayne Stapleton for all of their support, along with the parents, who have all bought into the vision that they have created for the club.

"This means a whole lot. I really appreciate it," said Charlton about his award, which he dedicated to his mother.
