VOLLEYBALL

THE Defenders and the Avengers won the Bahamas Volleyball Federation's T.M.T. Independence Volleyball Tournament, held over the weekend at the DW Davis Gymnasium.

The tournament was held in memory of the late Tamaz M Thompson, a former Bahamas senior and junior national team player and daughter of Perry Thompson, coach of the men's national basketball champions Commonwealth Bank Giants.

In the ladies' championship, the Defenders won 25-8 and 25-14 over the Vixens as Raechel Knowles was named the most valuable player.

And in the men's game, Renaldo Knowles was selected as the MVP as he helped the Avengers win 24-26, 25-16 and 15-8 over the Technicians.

Along with the Defenders and Vixens in the ladies' division were the Lady Technicians, Warhawks and the Giants, a team of junior and senior high school players coached by Pattie Johnson. The Avengers and the Technicians were joined by the Defenders and a youth under-23 team in the men's division.

In the preliminary rounds, the Defenders finished with a perfect 8-0 win-loss record to lead the ladies' division. They were followed by the Vixens (5-3), Lady Technicians (5-3), Warhawks (2-6) and Giants (0-8).

The Technicians had a 3-1 record to lead the men's division. They were followed by the Avengers at 2-2 and the Defenders at 1-3.

In the playoffs, the Defenders won 25-11 and 25-8 over the Warhawks in one half of the ladies division, while the Vixens got by the Technicians 25-18 and 25-16.

On the men's side, the Technicians got a bye, but the Avengers won 25-22 and 25-23 over the Defenders.

SCHOLARSHIP

FOR BROWN

THE Financial Aid Office at Valley City State University, Valley City, North Dakota announced that discus and shot put thrower Selina Brown has been awarded the Friends of Business Scholarship by the Department of Business for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Brown is a junior pursuing a major in Business Administration: accounting and a minor in Spanish. She is the daughter of Whittington and Sonjia Brown and the sister of University of Arkansas' discus and shot put thrower Serena Brown.

SUMMER JUNIOR

LEAGUE

The New Providence Basketball Association's Summer Junior League programme is now in full swing at the AF Adderley Gymnasium.

In the 15-16 category games played over the weekend, the Supreme Ballers won 44-39 over the Bain Town Ballers and Englerston routed the Tigers 49-24.

And in the 13-14 category, the Super Stars nipped the Tigers 33-31 and Englerston held off the Ballers 30-22.

Play is expected to continue this weekend.
