Where the sea meets the facts

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Many Bahamians make the mistake of getting their “facts” from bloggers, Youtube videos and other social media!

Case in point: A number of videos have been circulating in recent days that suggest that the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea at the Glass Window Bridge in Eleuthera! And people are falling for this!

While it’s an extremely romantic and colourful notion – one that could fire the imagination of visitors to our shores – it’s a total fallacy. The Caribbean Sea does not meet the Atlantic Ocean at Eleuthera, nor at any other point in The Bahamas! This is not debatable; it’s not a matter of opinion; it’s a fact!

If you want an explanation of the seeming phenomenon at the Glass Window Bridge, ask someone – the Bahamas National Trust, the Met Office, et al. Or simply anyone who’s ever picked up an atlas or studied high school level Geography.

The “Caribbean Sea, suboceanic basin of the western Atlantic Ocean, lying between latitudes 9° and 22° N and longitudes 89° and 60° W. It is approximately 1,063,000 square miles (2,753,000 square km) in extent. To the south, it is bounded by the coasts of Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama; to the west by Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, and the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico; to the north by the Greater Antilles islands of Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico; and to the east by the north-south chain of the Lesser Antilles, consisting of the island arc that extends from the Virgin Islands in the northeast to Trinidad, off the Venezuelan coast, in the southeast. Within the boundaries of the Caribbean itself, Jamaica, to the south of Cuba, is the largest of a number of islands. (Brittanica)

Exactly. I made a similar comment related to an earlier news story and video in which people were heard commenting on the Caribbean Sea flowing over Eleuthera Island and somebody tried to make fun of my correction. Perhaps this serves to show that some people don't know and don't want to know. They prefer to look uneducated and foolish.
