Insurance industry mourns passing of former Summit chair

The Bahamas Insurance Association (BIA) is mourning the passing of industry veteran, and former chairman, Colin Jones.

A respected insurance executive who contributed significantly to the sector's development in The Bahamas, Mr Jones joined Summit Insurance Company at its formation in 1994. He served as its first chief executive, and was chairman of the company until his recent passing.

Prior to joining Summit, Mr Jones had successfully run companies for National Employers Mutual in Jamaica in the 1960s, and Trinidad in the1980s. He had also risen to a very senior level in NEM in the UK.

His experience, reputation and contacts in the market proved invaluable in securing reinsurance capacity. He led Summit through its first 11 years, a period which saw hurricanes such as Floyd, Frances and Jeanne impact The Bahamas.

Mr Jones served as BIA chairman from 2001 to 2004. In recognition of his contribution to the insurance industry in The Bahamas, he was honoured during the BIA's 40th anniversary celebration in 2015. He will be remembered as an avid supporter, adviser and mentor to many insurance professionals in The Bahamas during his career.

The BIA, on behalf of its executives and members, said it wished to extend its deepest condolences to his family, friends and Summit employees.
