We want our old garbage system back

EDITOR, The Tribune

Further to my letter of 2nd January 2019, questioning why our government would feel it necessary to summarily dismantle a garbage collection system that was working extremely well for several years and replace it with novice entrepreneurs ( ontropeners in the colloquial ).

Full 90 days has passed now since that letter, and the situation is no better than it was then and is perhaps even worse. A number of Eastern District residents, not able to store garbage sanitarily for three and four weeks on end, have contracted with the previous government contractor, Bahamas Waste to have a private collection once a week. Surprisingly, yesterday the new government contractor came by and took my garbage and today my paid service came by and left empty handed.

If one tried to write a novel about government stupidity this would be a very good case to include.

Dr Minnis, could we please have our previously working collection system restored. You can deploy the new contractors out in Killarney.

The General Post Office was busted up and no longer functions properly and now the same thing is happening to our garbage collection system. Yep, the Minnis-led FNM government couldn't organize a good piss up in a pub right next to a brewery.

And just think how ripe and stink all of that garbage piled up in street-side dumpsters is going to be with the sweltering heat of summer coming all too soon. The disease carrying rats are already having a field day.

Promises by those charged with pickup are broken, when foodstuffs are kept in a freezer until the night before a pickup schedule and four days later the smell from rotting garbage in the heat is overwhelming. It is not going back in the freezer. Bring back Bahamas Waste! They know what they are doing and how to keep and maintain a proper understandable schedule that can be relied upon.

Nothing to say! Our culture is like - you pay, I'll pile up on your bills since you pay. I have no problem my not paying property tax, business licence, car licence or insurance having valid anything but will have 25 children 8 inside and 17 outside for you to pay for, you might have 2 which you school and rear properly and I will let you pay for you and myself - and my inside and outside chirren as well, and YOU will be be prosecuted if you don't.

A relative of mine who lives in an upscale neighbourhood in the east made this comment. The reputable waste management had their contract stopped in mid-December abruptly. His garbage was not collected for three weeks. The company which got the new contract did not have the right vehicle. These situations in the country is just getting more frustrating.
