Law has to keep up with banned drugs

EDITOR, The Tribune

The topic “Synthetic” Marijuana was timely and very interesting. It was held at Wesley Methodist, Blue Hill Road and Chapel Street. The presenter was Dr Kirk Christie; Clinical Director of Female and Substance Abuse Services.

The meeting was held on Tuesday, November 19, 2019. The prayer was said by CCAC (Community Counselling and Assessment Centre) Staff Member Mr Samuel Gay, attendant.

The issue of Marijuana commission legalising Marijuana for recreational purposes vs incrimination was debated.

The discussion centred around Plant Marijuana vs Synthetic Marijuana. It was also noted that China is producing synthetic substances for export. The law has to keep up with the banned substances. These NPS (New Psychoactive Substances) are targeting children.

It was also noted that out of 100 people trying drugs 80% will use just once. Synthetic cannabinoids sold in the market can cause death by an over dose.

Synthetic Marijuana is made in the Lab by scientists and targets children because it seems attractive to the eyes. The packaging is pretty, but can cause one to act out of character. Marijuana is naturally grown from the earth, but Synthetic cannabinoids is made up in the lab. Authorities in the USA are cracking down in Manhattan, New York. Synthetic Marijuana destroys the brain and can cause trembling. It causing the users to act out of character.

I would give Dr Christie an A- next time he can work on the following: The print or text on the screen was too fine; people were squinting to see the text and the full time of the presentation could have been better utilised by entertaining a question and answer period.
