No sugar? Well that's not very customer friendly

EDITOR, The Tribune

I decided to purchase a breakfast sandwich through the drive through of Wendys, Bernard Road. When I received the order I asked for a few packets of sugar and was told by the staff that sugar could only be given to those purchasing coffee or tea from the store.

This, though an exceedingly trivial issue, is symptomatic of the fact that although the primary pillar of this economy is customer service, so many do not seem to understand what that means, based on how widespread these kinds of responses are.

A basic premise in customer service businesses is to encourage customers to return. Every business needs customers, not every customer has to purchase the products or services of a particular business! It is unfortunate, given the current state of the economy that businesses are not more proactive in retaining customers and properly training their staff. Much training is needed in customer service in this country!

It would be helpful for businesses and their employees to remember that the customer is doing the business a favour by using their services or purchasing their products, not the other way around!

May I ask what you want the sugar for? It is a strange request to order a sandwich and a couple packets of sugar. Assuming you got an orange juice instead of a coffee/tea, was the sugar to put in your juice - to make it sweeter? Was it to sprinkle on your egg sandwich?

… surely the customer knows what it was for, since requests generally do not have to come with explanations!

Restaurants are NOT in business to provide customers with things they simply want. I wouldn't expect a restaurant to just hand over packets of ketchup when all I order is a small soda. Packets of sugar have a cost and that cost is reflected in the price of coffee/tea - not sandwiches.

The store can not be blamed for this one. besides the server was only following orders. Buy your own sugar. but it would have been nice to give you the sugar.

The entitlement mentality in action. I is a customer so I is entitled to some free tings ..
