Warehouse donated to Dorian relief effort

A businessman has donated a Marsh Harbour warehouse to the Bahamas Disaster Reconstruction Authority for use as the main storage facility for Dorian-related relief and reconstruction materials.

Chad Sawyer said he provided the former Save-A-Lot facility to the authority for a period to help the reconstruction effort.

“This is my home. I have to do what I can to help it come back,” he said. “All lost some. Some lost all. I know there is a need for it. Rather than let it sit there unoccupied, I chose to do that to help the island and country.”

Clean-up is underway at the 30,000 square foot facility at Don McKay Boulevard. It is scheduled to be ready for use at the beginning of 2020.

Katherine Forbes-Smith, the Authority’s managing director, said: “Hurricane Dorian caused extraordinary damage on mainland Abaco, its cays and Grand Bahama.

“The government is leading a multi-faceted response to this disaster with the private sector, and local and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Mr Sawyer’s donation will help organise storage and distribution of the large amount of goods, material and equipment that are part of this relief and reconstruction effort.”

The Bahamas Disaster Reconstruction Authority was established by Parliament to spearhead the response to Hurricane Dorian in Grand Bahama and Abaco.
