Bowling pins heat up at trials for national squad

AFTER Monday night when four men and one lady averaged 200 over the five games, there has been some shaking up in the top six for the men and a new leader for the ladies.

Anthony “Belmo” Ingraham stumbled just a bit, but still holds onto a 52-pin lead in the men’s division of the 2020 Bahamas Bowling Federation National Squad Trials after two blocks.

Derrick ‘Sheriff’ Burrows is in the second position but gained some ground on the Bahamas’ two-hand wonder.

Burrows has an “APB” (All Points Bulletin) out on Ingraham so, over the next two blocks, Ingraham must bowl. Otherwise, he will be caught. King David Slatter sits in the third position after 10 games of bowling.

Graham Higgs now occupies the fourth position with 2,071 pins. This is good for a 207 average over 10 games.

Kevin Williams did not have a particularly good night and he now finds himself in the 5th position with 2,010.

Coming into the top six is Obinna Okpunna, who did not have a 200 average night but bowled well enough to crack the top six. With a 954 pins performance, Okpunna now has 1,987 pins for the two blocks bowled and sits in the coveted 6th and final position. Only the top six will be added to the 2020 BBF National Bowling Squad.

President Tyrone Knowles shot a paltry 905 to fall to the eighth position. He has 1,944 total pinfalls for two blocks.

With two blocks left, nerves will be frayed and tension will be high as the rubber begins to meet the road come today when bowling resumes beginning the third block.

It’s a safe bet that the top four will stay within the top six for the duration of the tournament.

However, Okpunna and Kevin Williams must stay focused because with Kelsey Rolle (1,969), Tyrone Knowles (1,944), Ken Braithwaite (1,926) and Clayton Gardiner (1,917) lurking around, the fifth and sixth positions are conceivably up for grabs.

On the ladies’ side, Driskel Rolle toppled the pins for 1,015 to move into the top spot with an overall 2,063 pin count after two blocks.

First block leader Janice Hoyte fell to the second position. Janice bowled 955 on Monday night and now has a total of 2,007 pins after 10 games (two blocks).

Camille Burnside continues to hold the third position with 1,838 pins. Rounding out the top six ladies are - 4th Floridamae Wilson, 5th Shanta Kerr Richardson and 6th Paula Harts. There are 18 men and 10 women bowling in the 2020 BBF Nationals Squad trials.

The action resumes tonight when the bowlers will take to the lanes to complete the 3rd block. The action starts at 7pm.
