Beware the taxi drivers

EDITOR, The Tribune

Someone has upset the sleeping tiger of the taxi drivers! Hope they know what they are doing? Because we all remember what the infamous general strike started with…a strike of the taxi drivers at the airport.

What is this crazy regulation that drivers may not ask visitors - if they want a tour or a taxi? This is now an offence of the Road Traffic Act!

History will tell the taxi union were exceptionally stupid over time – and did not organise and establish a vibrant tour company, as a co-operative and compete with the majestics and others.

Taxis have to remember that they have a longstanding customs concession - no duty on their vehicles…very valuabIe.

I look round today, the new style taxi is an “econo-vehicle”, usually second hand from Japan; landed for $4-$5,000 and now for the taxi person no duty. Who can beat that? At LPIA they had better be cautious, as what means of transportation do the majority of visitors use to get to Atlantis and Baha Mar? Not tour companies?

Déjà vu….uncertain but it looks as if they, the taxis get organised, we could be seeing a new union industrial action.

Mr. Moss - dont worry about any strike. Bahamians are sleeping. The WTO container ship is on its way with enough corned beef for everyone.

I have to take taxis at times and am amazed at how at least 50% are offering me a hookup with one of the girls that they have in their stable. I never have such blatant pandering in any other country where a taxi service is employed.

The majority of taxi drivers I have had the pleasure of meeting, have not be a pleasure to meet. Most are crass, nasty, greedy. There are always some fantastic ones of course; but there are not enough of them. When I first started my AirBnB the very first customer that came arrived by taxi almost got scammed. Thankfully I was there because the taxi driver dropped him at the front door and the guy gave him a $100 bill for the $35 plus tip ride. The taxi driver simply said I don't have any change and proceeded to reach out for the $100 bill. The customer didn't have any smaller bills either. The taxi didn't offer to go get change or to bring back change, he just reached for the bill. Thankfully I was there to give the taxi guy $40 and tell him to carry his @$$!

Several times I took a cab from home to the airport or vice versa. Had to pay a different price each time for the same route . Only one driver requested the correct fare. These scammers should not be among the first the guests to this country meet!!
