Eighty students from 13 different schools participated in the third annual economics essay competition this February at Anatol Rodgers High School. It was organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with The Nassau Institute and sponsored by the Templeton Religion Trust.

The competition was open to senior high school business students in public and private schools in New Providence and the Family Islands. The students were required to write an essay on a subject based on the book “Economics in One Lesson” by renowned American economist Henry Hazlitt. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded for the three best essays and the winner will attend a three-day economics seminar in the USA. All entrants will receive a certificate of participation.

Last year’s winner was Kiran Halkitis of St Augustine’s College, as well as a cash prize, he attended a seminar under the auspices of the Foundation for Economic Education in Atlanta, Georgia.

Speaking to The Tribune after overseeing the competition again this year in his capacity as a director of The Nassau Institute, former British High Commissioner Peter Young thanked the Templeton Religion Trust for its generous support and the Ministry of Education for its efficient organisation of the event. He mentioned, in particular, Gwendolyn Johnson, the officer responsible for business studies at the ministry together with Lakell Johnson of CR Walker Senior High School and Samantha Keziah Knowles of Central High School in Palmetto Point.

A prize giving ceremony will be arranged next month.
