THE Bahamas Telecommunications Co. (BTC) has recorded a more than 30 percent reduction in energy consumption after switching to alternative energy products at 12 facilities.

In a press statement, the communications provider credited its energy conservation to the introduction of LED Lighting and Solar Thermal Air Conditioning Technology by PowerPlus Bahamas, a Bahamian-owned alternative energy business.

“We utilised the Soldier Rd facility as our pilot project,” said Robert Williams, BTC Cable & Wireless Vice President of Engineering, “PowerPlus projected a 51% daytime efficiency, but they actually achieved 63%!”

“Implementation of these technologies resulted in an average 32% reduction of energy consumption for each of these buildings over a two-year period,” BTC’s statement read.

“BTC’s Camperdown facility in Nassau achieved a 40% reduction and all the buildings combined resulted in a return on investment of 2.1 years.

PowerPlus Bahamas launched in 2011, and works with international partners to provide unique and exclusive alternative products for many businesses looking to reduce their daily operating expenses.

“Reduce Before You Produce,” said PowerPlus Sales and Technical Consultant, Greg Uptagrafft, “we encourage our customers to let us do the hard work for them and refuse to sell them solutions that do not work.”

PowerPlus introduced and implemented energy saving technologies to numerous businesses including The Grand Bahama Shipyard, Bahamas Electricity Corporation, Abaco Beach Resort, Grand Bahama Port Authority, Kelly’s Freeport Ltd., and Dolly Madison Home Centre.
