Knights, Raptors take early lead

THE 26th Annual GSSSA Track and Field Championships got underway yesterday and continued its format with both junior schools and senior schools competing simultaneously.

The CH Reeves Raptors have taken an early lead in their bid to regain the title among juniors, while the perennial champions of the senior division, the CR Walker Knights, have their usual day one lead.

The Raptors’ total of 262.50 points lead the defending champions AF Adderley Tigers with 244 points. The HO Nash Lions are third with 143 points, ahead of the DW Davis Royals in fourth with 104.50 points while the SC McPherson Sharks rounded out the top five with 97 points. The LW Young Golden Eagles scored 92, the Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves scored 54 and the TA Thompson Scorpions posted 53.

With a slim margin separating the programmes, results from the under-15 boys’ javelin, discus and the under-15 girls’ high jump.

Among the eight senior schools, the Knights lead the field with 209.50 points with the CI Gibson Rattlers in second place with 181.50 points and the Doris Johnson Mystic Marlins third with 123 points.

The CV Bethel Stingrays are fourth with 117, the RM Bailey Pacers are fifth with 106 points, the CC Sweeting Cobras are sixth with 71, Government High Magic in seventh with 56 points and Anatol Rodgers completing the field with 33.

Individually, the 100m, 400m, 1,200m and 1500m were contested on the track with a number of events on the field to conclude the first day. Again, the results were spread around but several athletes won multiple events on day one, highlighted by the 100m, 400m and 4x100m relays on the track.In the under-13 girls, Katranel Dean of AF Adderley was one of the top performenrs on the afternoon. She took first place in the 100m (13.82 seconds), long jump (4.03m) and ran the third leg on another first place finish in the 4x100m (58.26).

In under-13 boys, Finleey Etienne of the CH Reeves Raptors also won multiple events with first place in the long jump (4.24m), 400m (1:06.52) and second leg on the first place 4x100m relay in 56.19.
