Gibson’s Huskies, Whylly’s Hurricanes on winning streaks

WINNING streaks for both Qyemah Gibson’s St Mary’s Huskies and Roosevelt Whylly’s Holland College Hurricanes continued in U Sports and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association basketball respectively.

The Huskies improved to 14-0 on the season in the first year with the Bahamian connection of Ollen Smith as a member of the coaching staff and Gibson on the court.

St Mary’s scored a two-game weekend sweep over Trevon Grant and the Acadia Axemen.

In game one, the Huskies scored a 103-93 win. Gibson scored just two points while Grant scored 13 and grabbed five rebounds.

The Huskies led by just six at the half but opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run to put the game away for good.

In game two, Gibson finished with eight points and three rebounds in just eight minutes of a 96-70 win over the Axemen. Grant again finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

After a closely contested first quarter, the Huskies went ahead by 13 in the second quarter. St Mary’s took a 71-54 lead into the fourth and controlled for the rest of the way.

In other U Sports play, Leashja Grant and the Lakehead Thunderwolves got back into the win column after their first pair of consecutive losses for the season.

The Thunderwolves won both games over the weekend against the Western Mustangs to improve to 14-4 on the season and retain second place in the OUA West.

In game one, Grant posted 29 points and 12 rebounds in a 97-60 win. She followed with 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks in a 65-52 win in game two. The Thunderwolves also hosted the Think Pink! Shoot For the Cure during the game. The yearly event helps raise money for cancer research, with local funds going to the Northern Cancer Fund.

The Dalhousie Tigers also won both games over the weekend with a sweep of Cape Breton. They opened with a 93-84 win. Jordan Wilson posted 12 points, six rebounds and four assists while Shamar Burrows had seven points and two rebounds.

Cape Breton led 43-40 at the half, but Dalhousie dominated the third quarter 27-13 to take the lead for good. Wilson finished with six points and six rebounds while Burrows had four points and two boards.

The Tigers improved to 8-6 on the season.

Azaro Roker and the St Fx X-Men continue to struggle at 4-9 on the season after a pair of losses to the UNB Reds.

In an 80-60 game one loss, Roker was held scoreless but grabbed a game high 13 rebounds with three blocked shots.

The Reds took game two 92-71. Roker finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

The Hurricanes continue to dominate the ACAA and improved their record to 13-0 after this weekend’s wins over the Dalhousie-AC Rams.

In a dominant 114-88 game one win, the Hurricanes jumped out to a 30-19 lead after one quarter and would lead 66-42 at the half.

Whylly had a double double with 29 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, two steals and a blocked shot. He was just as dominant in game two with 32 points and 11 rebounds in a 100-79 win.

Briontae Riley and the Hurricanes split their games over the weekend with a loss to the UKC Blue Devils and a win over the Rams.

Riley finished with 15 points and 16 rebounds in the 92-46 win over the Rams.

Also in the CCAA, the Niagara Knights improved to 11-3 with a 101-93 win over the Mohawk Mountaineers.

Hutchinson finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds, both game highs. Kevin Cooper had four points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
