BAISS track & field: QC Comets lead by 17 points

THE top two schools atop the leaderboard in the BAISS Track and Field Championships standings are separated by just 17 points, setting the stage for a thrilling finish in today’s finale.

Heading into the final day of competition, the Queen’s College Comets have tallied 737 points ahead of the defending champions St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine with 720.

The Comets headed into day two with a 38-point advantage over the Big Red Machine, but SAC was able to cut into that deficit by 21 points.

The standings remained virtually unchanged for the rest of the 12-team field.

The St John’s College Giants are third with a total of 221.83 points, followed by the Temple Christian Suns in fourth with 205.50 points.

The St Anne’s Blue Waves complete the top five with 126.67 points. The Kingsway Academy Saints (103 points) and Nassau Christian Academy Crusaders (102 points) are separated by just a single point in the race for sixth place.

The Jordan Prince Williams Falcons are in eighth place with 69 points, the Charles W Saunders Cougars are ninth with 48 points, just ahead of St Andrew’s School Hurricanes in 10th with 42 points, the Lyford Cay International School Dragons are 11th with 18 points and the Aquinas College Aces round out the field with seven points.

Comets and Big Red Machine competitors swept all but two events in the field.

The U20 Boys High Jump took center stage with a pair of CARIFTA qualifying standards. QC’s Shaun Miller took first place with a new personal best jump of 2.14m followed by Benjamin Clarke of SAC at 2.01m. They both surpassed the CARIFTA qualifying mark of 1.97m. SAC’s Ashanti Johnson finished third at 1.87m.

The Big Red Machine took the top two spots in the trio of Long Jump events yesterday. Ariana Gomez won the U13 Girls with a leap of 4.38m followed by teammate Zaria Stapelton at 3.94m. Vinajah Adderley won the U20 Girls event with her mark of 5.41m followed by Lakelle Kinteh at 5.22m. Steph Farquharson won the U17 Boys event at 5.99m with Otto Laing second at 5.70m.

The Big Red Machine also won the three contested Shot Put events. SAC’s Cailyn Johnson won the U13 Girls at 7.18m, Branae Sherman won the U20 Girls with a throw of 11.31m nd Dhylan Culmer took the U17 Boys with his throw of 11.64m.

A pair of Comets topped the standings in the U13 Boys High Jump. Kenny Moxey took first place at 1.37m followed by Bohan Adderley at 1.35m. SAC’s Mario Forbes was third at 1.33m.

The Comets’ Ciara Bowe took first in the U15 Girls Javelin with a throw of 20.59m followed by Sierra Rodgers of SAC with her throw of 20.10m. Kingsway’s Breyah Archer was third at 16.66m.

SAC’s Ann-Marie Oriakhi won the U17 Girls Discus with her throw of 29.44m followed by teammate Raevyn Bethell at 26.25m

QC’s Koi Adderley won the U15 Girls High Jump with her mark of 1.45m. TC Teammates Claire Ferguson (1.43m) and Kendrea Munroe (1.35m) were second and third respectively.

QC’s Destiny Greenslade won the U17 Girls Triple Jump at 10.77m and teammate Sean Rolle won the U20 Boys Javelin with a throw of 59.05m.

Other winners in the field included TC’s Kerlin King in the U15 Boys Triple Jump at 11.23m and Kingsway’s Tamario Petty in the U15 Discus at 34.29 secs.

The 100m finals highlighted events on the track and SAC took four of the eight races in the event.

Leading the list of performances in the 100m was the Big Red Machine’s standouts in the U20 division.

Adrian Curry finished first in the U20 Boys in 10.55 secs. Max Azor of Queen’s College was second in 10.74 secs and Showalter Johnson of NCA was third in 10.95 secs.

The Big Red Machine’s duo of Jaida Knowles and Lakelle Kinteh were the top two finishers in the U20 Girls. Knowles finished first in 11.57 secs, followed by Kinteh’s 11.94 secs and the Saints’ Aisha Johnson was third in 11.98 secs. SAC’s Anthaya Charlton finished first in the U17 Girls race 11.84 secs followed by D’Arjha Davis of St. Andrews in 12.34 secs and Sanai Forbes of SAC third in 12.37 secs.

The Big Red Machine’s Joshua Miller took the U17 Boys race in 11.03 secs while Davon Johnson of St. Anne’s was second in 11.07 secs and Keano Ferguson of QC, third in 11.18 secs.

The Comets’ dominated the U13 races producing teammates with 1-2 finishes in each race.

QC’s Rajae Saunders won the girls race in 12.97 secs followed by teammate Presconiqua Cooper in second at 13.12 secs and Shayann Demeritte of SAC third in 13.51 secs.

Tristan King followed with a win in the U13 Boys race in 12.43 secs followed by teammate Bohan Adderley in second at 13.11 secs. Matthias Brice of St. John’s was third at 13.28 secs. King also won the Shot Put with a throw of 8.66m.

Amari Pratt of Temple Christian and Carlos Brown of St. John’s moved up in divisions but were able to return as 100m champions.

Pratt won the U15 Girls in 12.55 secs followed by Paige Archer of SAC in 12.64 secs and Maylne Clarke of SAC in 12.72 secs.

Brown won the U15 Boys in 11.37 secs ahead of NCA’s Jeremiah Adderley in 11.49 secs and QC’s Kyle Bain in 11.64 secs.

QC’s Andrew Hephurn took first place in the U17 Boys 3000m in 10.04.92 seecs, followed by Jayden Wright of LCIS in 10:20.66 secs and Amadeo Cartwright of St. Andrews was third in 10:47.96 secs. The Comets took took the top spots in the U20 Girls race led by Davia Wright in 13:40.89 secs, followed by teammate Leajha Williamson in 13:48.55 secs and Hanna Darville of SAC in 14:17.68 secs

Day three will be highlighted by several field events and finals in the 200m, 800m, 4x100m and 4x400m. The meet continues today with a shift in venue to the new Thomas A Robinson Stadium, beginning at 9am.
