Team Bahamas added a bronze from the 7 -a-side Unified soccer team to its medal haul at the Abu Dhabi Special Olympics World Summer Games.

Gilbert Williams, head of the delegation, said the soccer team played exceptionally well after playing to a scoreless tie at the end of regulation, only to come up with a goal from Donte Singh, the captain of the team, to secure a 1-0 win over China for their medal.

That pushed the Bahamas’ total to 12 medals, inclusive of five gold, two silver and five bronze so far. “The team was jumping around. They were excited, they were elated and the coaches were really excited about the finish,” Williams said. “The Bahamas soccer team ended on a high note coming out with the bronze medal.”

The bocce team of Latonya Moss out of Abaco and Stephen Goliath-Russell out of Grand Bahama won their pair of doubles matches today against Jordan and Canada and will face Colombia in the gold medal match today.

Frank Knowles, who already secured a gold in the 400m, will also run in the 800m and the 4 x 400m relay today as the track and field competition comes to a close. Also yesterday, the duo of Anita Moncur and Bronson Aranha finished in sixth place in the doubles in bowling. Moncur, however, will leave the games with a gold in singles.

And all three athletes in track and field fell short of getting on the podium. Tavaris Cooper and Christopher Rolle, both in the 100m, and Charleas Bain, in the 400m, all ended up in sixth place.

Bain, according to Gilbert Williams, was quite disappointed because it was her speciality and she had hoped to add to the bronze she picked up in the 200m.

The team is scheduled to return home 3:30pm Friday on British Airways. Williams said they hope that the Bahamas can come out and cheer on the Special Olympics athletes for their performances in Abu Dhabi.
