Hail seen around New Providence after severe weather

SEVERE weather in New Providence likely caused reported hail sightings in the western part of New Providence on Wednesday, the Meteorology Department has said.

“There were some reports via WhatsApp from someone saying there was hail in Clifton,” one official said yesterday after two separate videos of hail falling went viral on social media.

“I can’t confirm that or deny that but I know for a fact that we had the possibility to have hail during those severe weather conditions.”

Hail forms when “thunderstorm updrafts are strong enough to carry water droplets well above the freezing level”, according to nasa.gov. “This freezing process forms a hailstone, which can grow as additional water freezes onto it. Eventually, the hailstone becomes too heavy for the updrafts to support it and it falls to the ground,” the website states.

In one video circulating on the messaging platform, a man is heard saying the hail fell in the Adelaide area earlier this week. In a separate video another said man said it happened in the area of Clifton Pier.

In March, Grand Bahama experienced a hailstorm due to severe weather conditions that developed.

The hail sightings were reported in various parts of the island, particularly in the Lucaya, Port Lucaya, Windsor Park, Malibu Reef and Williams Town.
