Top US govt financier set to visit Bahamas

The head of the US government’s development finance institution will visit The Bahamas next week to explore investment opportunities in energy and other sectors.

David Bohigian, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation’s (OPIC) acting president and chief executive, will also visit Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and St Lucia during his May 19 to 22 sweep of the Caribbean. These are the countries whose leaders were previously invited to a private audience with US president, Donald Trump, at his private Florida estate.

Besides potential investments, an OPIC statement said the visit is designed to strengthen relationships with countries that are key partners with the US “in fostering stability and security in the Western Hemisphere”. Mr Bohigian and his delegation will meet with senior government officials and business leaders during the trip.

“At a meeting in March with Caribbean leaders to discuss trade, energy investment and security concerns, President Trump reaffirmed the US’ commitment to working with its partners in the region to foster economic growth, counter predatory investment practices, and strengthen security co-operation,” OPIC added.
