Wells and Stubbs selected to Academic All-League Team

SASHA Wells and Kayvonn Stubbs received an honour for their work in the classroom following a season of milestones on the track for the Oral Roberts University Eagles.

The duo, both sophomores, were selected to the Summit League’s 2019 Academic All-League Team as voted on by a panel of faculty athletic representatives and sports information directors from the league’s member institutions.

Student athletes were chosen for the accolade based on their academic and athletic performances this past season.

North Dakota State paved the way with 10 total selections.

For 16 of the 24 honourees, it was the first time making the outdoor Academic All-League list.

To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 per cent of their team’s competitions. Wells, a history major, finished with a 4.0 GPA while Stubbs, a cinema TV and digital media major, had a GPA of 3.91.

Both recently competed at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Regionals in Sacramento, California.

In the 100m hurdles, Wells finished 19th overall in a time of 13.59 seconds. In the opening round, she set a new personal best, and new school record of 13.39 en route to earning a spot in the quarter-final.

Stubbs was eighth in heat two of the 200m with her time of 25.67 (+2.0), 46th overall.

Following the conference championships, Wells was named the 2019 Summit League Outdoor Track Championship MVP.

Wells shattered the meet record with a time of 13.44 in the 100 metre hurdles, tying her personal best which she ran at the 2018 CARIFTA Games.

Individually, Wells also took first place in the 100m (11.83), and second in the 200m (24.48).

Stubbs took first place in the 200m in 23.99 and was second in the 100m in 11.85.

The Bahamian contingent at Oral Roberts University continues to deliver for the Eagles and had several of the programme’s top performances at the Summit League Championship.

Sasha Wells was awarded the Track MVP while Gabrielle Gibson was named Newcomer of the meet.

Gibson accounted for 15 points at the meet to earn Newcomer of the Championship honours. She finished second in the 100m hurdles (14.09) and fourth in the 200m (24.53).

The Bahamian trio also lead Oral Roberts to a first place in the 4x100m in 46.52. Stubbs and Gibson were also members of the first place 4x400m team (3:45.75). She became the first Golden Eagle in conference history to achieve the honour.

A season of milestones was highlighted by her performance at the 2019 Summit League Championships where she was named MVP after earning a total of 26 points. She tied the league championship record and broke her own school record in the 60-metre hurdle preliminaries, with her time of 8.41.

She took first place in the the 60m (7.54), the 60m hurdles (8.47) and finished third in the 200m (24.54). She achieved an “All-League” honour in each event. She also won the 60m hurdles at four of five meets on the indoor circuit.
