We need to improve incentives to learn

EDITOR, The Tribune

“D is Depressing”

It is sometime since I wrote a letter to your paper. But the article entitled “D is depressing” cannot pass into history without a comment.

It is no doubt the Minister should shoulder the blame for the usual disastrous BGSCE exam results. But of course nothing will happen. Several years ago in a conversation with the then PS (Permanent Secretary) of the Ministry of Education the point was made by the PS that Education was far too political, decisions were taken in Cabinet, and the Education experts were unable to provide any light into improving the system – the politicians knew it all!! However that is not the only problem. You cannot blame the education system entirely. Lack of incentive to learn and improve oneself when there are no jobs available when you have finally graduated. Lack Of jobs - look at the number of closed shops and businesses around New Providence for example. What is the Government’s answer to that if they have one?
