Officer fired on biker 'after he pulled out gun'

A POLICE officer shot a man who allegedly pulled a gun on him while riding a motorcycle.

Police said the incident happened shortly after 11am on Monday when the officer was on routine patrol. The officer saw a man riding an unlicenced motorcycle and tried to stop the driver.

According to police, the man continued to speed, followed by the officer. As they were on Moore Avenue, the officer observed the driver of the motorcycle pull a black firearm from his waist.

“The officer, being in fear for his life, fired his service weapon in the direction of the male, hitting him to his leg and causing him to fall to the ground,” police said.

“The officer observed a black male (who) picked up the firearm and ran from the area. The injured man was transported to hospital and is listed in stable condition. No one else was injured during this incident.”

The shooting happened days after another man was shot by police on Saturday. That police-involved shooting happened outside a nightclub on St Alban’s Drive. Police said the man who was shot walked towards officers with a firearm and refused to drop the weapon after being ordered to do so. Police said officers, in fear of their lives, discharged their service weapons in the direction of the gunman, wounding him. At last report, he was in hospital in serious condition.

Investigations are ongoing.
