The postseason awards continue for Shaunae Miller-Uibo as she was officially invested with her National Honour - the Order of Lignum Vitae - yesterday at Government House.

The recent 400m silver medallist at the IAAF World Championships and national record holder in both the 200m and 400m was originally one of 21 Bahamians who received 2019 National Honours and were invested for excellence in national service by Governor General Cornelius A Smith at the National Honours Investiture Ceremony on National Heroes Day.

“It’s such a huge honour, I just want to say thank you to everyone who was involved, his excellency as well. It was a great honour and I’m just so happy for it that I can be awarded this recognition,” she said.

Miller-Uibo won the silver on October 3 in a Bahamian national and NACAC Area record time of 48.37.

“This year was one of the best years I’ve ever had in my career, I think the best so far. Being able to PR and get a national record in the 200m and 400m. I think I was ranked 11th overall in the 200m and sixth overall in the 400m and so it’s a big blessing.

“We’re still very young and pushing very hard to carry the Bahamas as high as we can.”

Her husband, Maicel Uibo of Estonia, competed in the men’s decathlon.

He made sure that he joined his wife on the podium when he finished with a personal best of 8,604 points for his silver at the end of the two-day 10-event competition on October 3 as well.

Along with 400m gold medallist Steven Gardiner, the trio have visited several schools in the capital and on various family islands while also making an appearance at the Silver Lightning Cross Country Championships.

Miller-Uibo said each moment has an added sense of significance as she gets to share her success with her husband.

“It’s a blessing. I’ve seen him work so hard this year, especially this year being able to come back from surgery, being able to share the moment with him and bring home two silvers was incredible,” she said. “Over here we really accept him as a Bahamian and I think he’s pretty aware of that. We just love everything the Bahamian people have done for him and we appreciate the support.

Looking ahead to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she has the 200m/400m double well in her sights. “We’re looking forward to it, we’re still putting in requests to change it for the double and if it all takes place we’re really looking forward to putting in that hard work and bringing home two golds,” said the 25-year-old sprinter.
