Context of the hurricane

EDITOR, The Tribune.

To explain the effects of Hurricane Dorian on The Bahamas.

Our population is approximately 385,000. The population of Abaco, 2017, estimated 18,000; Grand Bahama, 51,000.

Total approx 69,000 Abaco and GB is 18% of our population.

The population of the USA is approximately 327,000,000.

18% of the USA’s population affected by this hurricane would be about 59,000,000.

Even with all of their resources they had tremendous problems dealing with hurricanes Katrina and Harvey (2017!)

The damage that would need to be done in the USA in relation to The Bahamas from Hurricane Dorian; the approximate total of the population 59,000,000 of the following states would have been affected.

Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and 50% of the population in Tennessee.

Yes, but at least in the U.S. they have a workable plan that people actually follow. If you want proof of this, simply drive on the streets of a U.S. city. Now, try driving in Nassau. Do I need to say more? It's not just about the money damages, it's about people coming together to help each other in a coordinated, well planned and disciplined manner. We've got a long row to hoe.

To put this in even greater perspective, if we enforced building codes and immigration laws in Abaco alone the levels of devastation and death could possibly have been halved! This is why all shanty towns in this country have got to go!
