Woman arrested after $70,000 cocaine found

A WOMAN was arrested shortly after she arrived in the country on a flight from Panama and nearly $70,000 worth of cocaine was discovered.

Police said the woman, a resident of Suriname, arrived in the Bahamas on Copa Airlines shortly after 11am on Sunday but was denied entry by local immigration officials. She was taken to the Carmichael Road Detention Centre where she was processed and searched, police said.

Officials said they found 11 packages of suspected cocaine in her possession. She is expected to be charged in Magistrate’s Court later this week.

The drugs weighed 10.4 lbs with a street value of $68,000.

Police on New Providence are also searching for the suspects who robbed a man at gunpoint on Sunday.

Shortly after 11pm, a man was standing in front of a business on Wulff Road near Jerome Avenue, when he was approached by two gunmen who robbed him of cash and other items before getting into his silver coloured 2010 Ford Edge vehicle and speeding away.

Investigations are continuing.
