Cooking gas operators yesterday reassured consumers they have adequate supplies to cope with a surge in demand during the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown period.

Barry Pratt, managing director of Island Gas, told Tribune Business: “Supplies are fine and levels are where they should be. There is no strain on supply. You don’t have to worry about supplies but volumes are sky high. People are just wanting to stock up and buy propane.

“It’s been crazy because a lot of people are at home and they want to cook, and they want to make sure they have an adequate supply of propane.”

Harold Watson, managing director at Nassau Propane, another liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) operator, added: “It’s very busy, and what we are trying to do is put in place a procedure that would comfortably allow us to deal with the demand.

“We have taken the Prime Minister’s suggestions very strongly, and we have been going ahead and only allowing four cars on property at a time, practicing social distancing and making sure we provide our customers with efficient services and safe service.

“We have no issues with shorting, and we have a really good relationship with our supplier, Sun Oil. We haven’t had any issues, and don’t foresee us having any issue. We have several thousand gallons of fuel and we have been able to replenish those regularly like clockwork.”
