Bahamians turn up the heat on track

A NUMBER of Bahamians turned in credible performances over the weekend in both the professional and collegiate ranks.

Gaither fourth in Torun

At the World Athletics Indoor Tour's Orlen Copernicus Cup in Torun, Poland, sprinter Tynia Gaither got fourth in the women's 60 metres in 7.31 seconds. American Shania Collins posted the victory in 7.24. Gaither took second place in 7.38 behind Collins' winning time of 7.34 in the preliminaries. While Gaither ended up with the fifth fastest time, Collins finished with the third best time.

Jones wins at Milrose Games

At the Armory in New York, Grand Bahamian Terrance Jones clocked 33.65 to win the Sanford Udis boys' 300m. He was followed by Donovan Sanders from Philadelphia in 33.98.

Jones is preparing to defend his title in the under-20 boys 200m at the CARIFTA Games in Hamilton, Bermuda, over the Easter holiday weekend.

Also at the meet was another Grand Bahamian, Shatayla Dorsett, who was eighth overall in the Millrose Foundation girls 300m in 42.09. She was fourth in her heat, won by Ziyah Holman in 38.85. The winning time overall was 37.67 by Talitha Diggs.

Whymns triumph at Charlie Thomas Invitational

In the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station, Texas, Denvaughn Whymns posted a victory in the men's long jump. The South Plains sophomore cleared 7.31 metres or 23-feet, 11 3/4-inches over a field that saw Kenneth Pree, a sophomore at Houston, finish second with 7.29m (23-11).

Moss third in New Mexico

As one of the leading ladies in the 400m this year, Kentucky's freshman Megan Moss continues to make her presence felt, finishing third at the University of New Mexico Classic.

Moss trailed Natasha McDonald of Alabama, the winner in 52.64, and Chloe Abbott of Kentucky, who was second in 53.58.

Moss also ran on the lead-off leg for Kentucky as the team of Abby Steiner, Chloe Abbott and Alexis Holmes captured the victory in 3:30.64. They were followed by Alabama in 3:31.74.

Also at the meet, Sakeem Smith of UTEP picked up a fourth place in the men's 60m hurdles in 7.89. Robert Dunning of Alabama was the winner in 7.76. Smith advanced out of the preliminaries with a second place finish in his heat in 8.03 for the sixth fastest time.
