Doneisha Anderson victorious in the 400m

IN her greatest performance so far for the University of Florida, sophomore Doneisha Anderson surged to the front of the women's 400 metre final with an NCAA-leading time and a lifetime best to head a list of Bahamians competing at the Tiger Paw Invitational over the weekend.

Her winning time of 52.06 seconds was so impressive that it moved her up from the fifth spot on the NCAA performance list as she moved into the No.6 spot on the University of Florida's All-Time Top 10 list.

And in the process, Anderson prevailed in a showdown with her former St Augustine's College team-mate, Megan Moss, the freshman from the University of Kentucky, who was third 52.58 for seventh place. The two drew the same heat with Moss coming in third behind Anderson. Anderson also contested the women's 200m where she placed 18th overall in 23.68.

Two other Bahamians also competed in the event with Devine Parker, now in her sophomore year at Ohio State, 27th in 23.87 and Grand Bahamian Brianne Bethel, a senior at the University of Houston, 329th in 24.09.

Moss did not contest the 200m.

Instead, she and Anderson hooked up again in the 4 x 400m relay with Moss getting the edge as she led off Kentucky's team of Abby Steiner, Dajour Miles and Chloe Abbott to the victory in 3:29.74.

Meanwhile, Anderson anchored Florida's quartet of Manson Taylor, Nikki Stephens, Brandee Johnson to fourth place in 3:34.94.

Parker nor Bethel competed on their respective school relay teams. Parker, however, competed in the 60m where she was 22nd in the semi-finals in 7.62. The St Anne's High School graduate was 13th in the preliminaries in 7.43.

Imani Jones, a freshman at Auburn University, was 19th in the women's triple jump with 11.90m (39-0 1/2). She was also 13th in the long jump with 5.37m (17-7 1/2).

On the men's side, sprinter Warren Fraser sped to the victory in the men's 60m final in 6.56, holding off University of South Carolina's sophomore Brendon Stewart, who did 6.56. Fraser, competing unattached, had the fastest qualifying time in the preliminaries in 6.63 and the semifinals in 6.58.

St Augustine's College graduate Adrian Curry, now in his freshman year at Ohio State, had to settle for 40th place overall in the preliminaries of the 60m in 6.92.

The men's 400m final saw Grand Bahamian Alonzo Russell, competing unattached, end up 12th overall in 47.33. Jonathan Jones, a sophomore at Texas, won the event in 45.78.

And in the men's 200m, Ohio State's junior Tavonte Mott finished 26th overall in 21.49. Clemson's senior Marcus Parker won the event in 20.70.

On the field, Celine Thompson, a senior at the University of Miami, cleared 1.63 metres or 5-feet, 4 1/4-inches for 23rd place overall. The winning jump was 1.90m (6-2 3/4) by Kentucky's senior Ellen Ekholm to tie the facility record.

Nairn's victory at Tyson Invitational

A number of collegiate and elite athletes competed at the Tyson Invitational held over the weekend at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Leading the way was Arkansas' senior LaQuan Nairn with his winning leap of 16.11m (52-10 1/4) in the men's triple jump invitational. His nearest rival was Felix Obi of Nigeria with a mark of 16.03m (52-7 1/4).

Tamara Myers had the best performance with a second place finish in the women's triple jump invitational. Myers popped her best leap of 13.31m (43-8) to trail Essence Thomas, a junior from Oklahoma, who won the competition with 13.37m (43-10 1/2).

Holland Martin, entered in the men's long jump invitational, mustered a third place finish with a leap of 7.80m (25-7 1/4). JuVaughn Harrison, a junior at Louisiana State University, took the title with his jump of 8.11m (26-7 1/4).

Indiana's junior Jyles Etienne, who soared 2.11m (6-11) for fourth place in the men's high jump invitational. Harrison pulled off the double feat with his best leap of 2.28m (7-5 3/4) to add to his long jump triumph.

In the men's high jump, Ryan Ingraham had to settle fore fourth place with his best feat of 2.00m (6-6 3/4). Max Wagner, a senior at Michigan cleared 2.10m (6-10 3/4) for the victory.

Colebrooke double up in Nashville

At the Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee, Samson Colebrooke posted a victory in the men's 60m in 6.70. The Purdue senior took the title over a field that saw Calvin Austin, a junior at Memphis in 6.80.

In the preliminaries, Colebrooke won his heat in 6.75 for the second fastest qualifying time to match team-mate Waseem Williams, who was third in 6.81.

Colebrooke also secured the win in the 200m in 21.06 after he won his heat. Chris Borzor, a sophomore at Cincinnati, was the runner-up in 21.11. Corey Sherrod, a sophomore at South Illinois, was 22nd in 22.40. He was third in his heat.

Sherrod also got third in his heat of the 400m in 48.72 for 11th overall. Brian Faust, a junior at Purdue, won the event in 46.58.

Smith third at Iowa State

Kansas State freshman Oscar Smith came in third in the men's 60m hurdles at the Iowa State Classic at the Harry Hoak Track in Ames, Iowa in 8.09. Brithon Senior, a freshman at South Dakota, took the victory in 7.77. Smith advanced to the final by winning his heat in 8.05 for the third fastest time. Senior led the qualifiers with 7.89.

Parker fourth at USATF

At the Toyota USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Cameron Parker raced to a fourth place finish in his heat of the Xfinity men's 400m in 47.81 for 13th place overall. American Gil Roberts had the fastest qualifying time of 46.50, but came in sixth in the final in 46.79 as Rashard Clark won the title in 45.86.
