UK indicates support for Bahamas' 'Blue Economy'

The British High Commissioner has indicated that the UK will likely support The Bahamas’ efforts to develop the so-called “Blue Economy” and greater use of technology in agriculture.

Sarah Dickson shared her government’s potential backing when she paid a courtesy call on Michael Pintard, minister of agriculture and marine resources, on January 15, 2020.

Mr Pintard stated his approval of a regional project that would develop a “Blue Economy” in The Bahamas, which would involve the sustainable use of ocean and marine resources to spur economic growth, job creation and improve livelihoods.

The minister also discussed the need for a marine resource strategic plan that would help the Government’s objective to highlight the value of mangroves and coral reefs.

Ms Dickson disclosed the UK’s interest in the work of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in The Bahamas.

She said the UK would be willing to assist The Bahamas in areas such as scholarships, long-term exchange programmes, and partnerships with scientists that would facilitate small projects and assist with technology incubator projects.
