We need to find a new way to develop

EDITOR, The Tribune

The Bahamas requires an entirely new way of thinking about economic growth and development, and a new approach to structuring and operating its economy that can only be had by implementing innovative development economics and innovative development finance.

It is certainly obvious from the years of steadily increasing deficits, debt, and dependency, with little in the way of progress or success to show for them, that the existing methods and tools of economic development and related economic policies have not served the Bahamian people well. In fact, they only serve to exacerbate the other underlying problems and inequities that perpetually exist in the Bahamian economy.

The question bears asking: for whose benefit is the development of The Bahamas intended? If for Bahamians, as it ought to be, then monumental economic reconstruction is required.

Without a complete overhaul of our country’s development strategy, all the money injected by the government to ‘save’ businesses and jobs will be wasted, and all the effort spent collecting ideas for ‘recovery’ will be futile. Truly, no amount of investment or new ideas will change our Bahamian economy for the better, until we change our Bahamian economy for the benefit of Bahamians.

I welcome constructive feedback in writing from my Bahamian people so please email me directly at economistNB@outlook.com
