Deadlock for Mingoes and Shockers – with decider to come

The University of the Bahamas Mingoes let the JD’s Seafood Shockers have the lead in their game only once—and that was in the opening two minutes at 2-1. The Mingoes knew they had to not only win this second game of the best-of-three series to stay alive but had to also send a statement.

They did both.

Led by Robert Joseph with 29 points and Kemsy Sylvestre with 27, The Mingoes beat the Shockers 91-73 Saturday night at the AF Adderley Gym in their New Providence Basketball Association’s division one action to even their best-of-three series is tied at 1.

The Shockers beat the Mingoes in the first game of the series 64-57.

Sylvester, who also pulled down 17 rebounds for the Mingoes, said a big game changer in game two was that he stayed out of foul problems.

“For most of the time I was out of foul trouble and you know we came out from the start we came out playing hard,” he said. “The defense had to be on point, our shooters were making their shots and we just kicked it off from the beginning.”

Joseph said they were able to get the win because they listened to Coach Bacchus Rolle.

“We stayed focused from the start to the end of the game and we did what coach said and we executed our plays on defense and on offence,” he said. “Coach was telling us to execute every play.”

Sylvestre added that the team recognized the problems from game one and have the momentum into game three.

“In the first game we weren’t pulling down our rebounds,” he said. “Like they had a lot of second chance shots. We got mixed up coming back down on defense. We were missing wide open lay-ups, missing shots you know, everything was just going bad the first game and of course I was in foul trouble and I play a valuable role on the team.”

Game three of the best-of-three series is set for 8pm Wednesday March 11, 2020 at The A.F. Adderley gym.
