AN elderly Spanish woman was arraigned yesterday in connection with the seizure of 12 pounds of dangerous drugs.

Esperanza Bonet-Roig, 73, of Mayorca, Spain appeared before Magistrate Andrew Forbes charged with one count each of possession of dangerous drugs – namely cocaine – and importation of dangerous drugs.

Bonet-Roig denied both charges through an interpreter and the case was adjourned to May 11 at 10am.

Bail was denied and she was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services, however she has the right to apply for bail in the Supreme Court.

Bonet-Roig was accused of being found on March 7 in possession of 12 pounds of cocaine with intent to supply.

The defendant was also charged with importing the drugs into the country that same day.

Magistrate Forbes said he had contacted a representative from the Spanish consulate in the country who told him she would speak to Bonet-Roig and make arrangements as soon as she could.

The judge also said he would send a note to notify the BDCS of the defendant’s “medical circumstances,” so that the appropriate arrangements could be made.
