A 35-year-old woman accused of stealing a water tank from a community park was yesterday placed on probation for two years.
Celia Lynes was accused of stealing a 250-gallon storage tank from the Edmund Spencer Moxey Youth and Community Centre on September 11.
She was initially arraigned with Kevin Cooper, 45, who pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined $1,500 and placed on probation for two years.
At the time, Lynes denied the allegation during a hearing before Magistrate Samuel McKinney and was denied bail ahead of her trial.
However, after spending seven weeks at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services, Lynes returned to court to plead guilty to the offence.
The prosecution said around 6.45am that day, the employee observed a burgundy coloured Passo with a male and female passenger driving on the park. She told officers she saw both accused leave the vehicle and head to the western side of the centre from where they took the water tank, strapping it to the top of their vehicle and driving off.
Acting on information, officers on mobile patrol in the Grove area stopped a vehicle fitting the description of the complainant’s account.
They beckoned for the car to stop and ordered the occupants to get out. Cooper and Lynes were subsequently cautioned and arrested.
After pleading guilty to the charge, Lynes was placed on two years’ probation. Magistrate McKinney said if she failed to be of good behaviour during that period, she would spend nine months in prison.
