Managing anger in the time of COVID

EDITOR, The Tribune.

I am not a medical practitioner so my opinions are just that – my opinions.

Eight months into the onslaught of COVID-19 we are seeing a dramatic increase in domestic and other abuses.

Anger management and conflict resolutions would appear to have escaped the plantation known as The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Court cases are reported daily.

Boyfriends and husbands are now, apparently, routinely beating girlfriends, especially the ex ones, for all sorts of purported reasons.

Some inflict beatings because they suspect that their partners are being unfaithful.

Others sexually abuse them by unwanted sexual intercourse.

If they do not live together, the curfews and weekend lockdowns have persuaded many Bahamian males to suspect the worst, especially if a vehicle is parked in the front of the abode.

Tens of thousands of Bahamians are currently unemployed and have been so for months.

I am sure that the financial pressures are unbearable.

Children are out of the physical classrooms.

Persons with medical needs find it difficult to access the medical facilities available.

The hurricane season is still upon us and the beat goes on.

Blame it all on COVID-19 and the response by the FNM administration or someone or something else.

The fact of the matter is that Bahamians are now financially and mentally near the edge of the bays and the slightest sneeze will send all of you over into the Valley of Dry Bones looming below. We are all on edge and will bap at another person at the drop of a hat.

You have a fender bender more than likely the other driver or even you, will storm out of your vehicle and get right up in his/her face. Violence on both sides then ensues.

Churches are basically inoperable so the wholesome religious communal support is missing.

Results? Everybody is screwed up to the maximum and it would be good to stay out of their way.

I submit, that most of us already had financial and mental issues when Dorian passed through last year.

Now with COVID-19 unless The Lord helps us we will continue to get down to the level of the fittest of the strong. To God then, in all things, be the glory.
