A MAN who admitted to helping his friends steal a car hood and battery from another man was fined $1,500 and ordered to compensate the owner of the vehicle.
Brandon McKenzie, 26, appeared before Magistrate Samuel McKinney after he was accused of stealing a $450 car hood and $119 car battery from Rudolph Carroll on August 23.
According to the prosecution, Mr Carroll told police someone had stolen the hood and battery of his Suziki Swift while it was parked at a residence in Bel Air Estates. Acting on information received, officers then went to McKenzie’s house and arrested him in reference to stealing. In an interview under caution at a nearby station, McKenzie denied stealing the car parts. Still, after further investigation, he was charged with the offense.
During the hearing, McKenzie was represented by attorney Ian Cargill. He told the magistrate his client was driving the vehicle that the people who stole the car parts occupied at the time. He also noted McKenzie took the officers to the homes of the people he was driving with that day and indicated where the stolen items were.
As a result, Magistrate McKinney fined the defendant $1,500 or nine months at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services for stealing. He also ordered McKenzie to compensate Mr Carroll $569 to replace his stolen property. Magistrate McKinney warned him if he failed to do so, he could risk spending an additional three months behind bars.
