A MAN was fined $250 yesterday after police found him at a local establishment without a face mask.

Ashford Bain, 30, pleaded guilty before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans after officers saw him at a business called “Wet Money” on Rosedale Street without a face mask on January 25.

The court was told that at 8.52pm that day, officers went to inspect the establishment when they saw the accused at the entrance gate with a drink his hand, but not wearing a face mask.

Police asked the accused for his mask and then informed him about being in violation of the COVID- 19 emergency orders.

As a result, Magistrate Vogt-Evans fined him $250 or one week at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

N’kem Taylor, 43, also appeared before Magistrate Vogt-Evans after police found him without a face mask at the same establishment on the same night.

During the hearing, Taylor explained that he was outside his car eating when the police came and questioned him about his reasons for not wearing a mask.

However, the accused said he told police that his mask was in his car door because he was getting ready to leave.

Taylor said the officer then told him that it was “not his problem” and he would be cited for the offence.

“My car was on. I was getting ready to leave, but I was only eating some food before I jumped in my car,” he told the court.

After accepting his guilty plea, Magistrate Vogt-Evans gave Taylor a warning and discharged him.
