A HAITIAN man who was caught residing in the country without the required legal documents will spend two months in prison before being deported back to his home country.

Brave Lovensky, 30, appeared before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans after he was found living in New Providence without the leave of an immigration officer.

He pleaded guilty to one count of illegal landing during his arraignment.

The court heard on April 20, an immigration enforcement team was dispatched to the Carmichael Road station to retrieve the accused who was arrested for immigration purposes. When they questioned him, Lovensky told the officers that he arrived by plane three years ago, but had no identification on him for the officers to verify his claims. As a result, he was cautioned and taken to the Detention Centre for further processing. There all checks of the system for his information came back with negative results.

During the hearing, Lovensky declined to comment. As a result, Magistrate Vogt-Evans accepted his guilty plea and sentenced him to two months behind bars.

She said once his sentence was completed, Lovensky would be handed over to the Department of Immigration for deportation.

After passing her sentence the magistrate said persons had to realise The Bahamas is a sovereign country and like all other countries, it had immigration laws that had to be respected.
