Several Bahamian businesses are backing the government’s move to extend its COVID-19 emergency powers beyond August 13 on the basis that Bahamians need to be protected from themselves.

Anthony Green, general manager at A&A Wholesale Snacks, told Tribune Business his main concern is that while the economy is trying to recover people still have to take precautions and keep away from mass gatherings and so-called COVID ‘super spreader’ events as much as possible.

He said: “It will be a tough balancing act. We have to take precautions and, at the same time, we need the economy going. I don’t mind the restrictions coming to an end once everyone keeps up with the protocols.”

COVID-19 cases have steadily been increasing over the last several weeks, averaging about 100 new infections per day. The government has so far responded to this through extending the curfew by one hour from 11pm to 10pm, while restricting restaurants to takeout and curbside service only. Tougher testing and travel requirements have also been implemented.

Rick Butler, a supervisor at Complete Auto Air Conditioning, added: “People need to be protected from themselves because they are practicing some reckless behaviour.

“I’m looking at it from this perspective. The persons who try to play it safe, they still have to cohabit with the people who are reckless. I’m saying some people need to be protected from themselves and the only way that could happen is if you force them to stay inside. I’m just concerned about the amount of people dying, and we need to do what ever it takes to protect people.”

Monique Cash, general manager of Consumer Choice Auto, said she did not mind if an extension to the Emergency Orders is granted. She added: “What they could do is just end the curfew and restrict businesses from operating so it wouldn’t give young people a place to go and hang out. That would help the situation.

“People don’t respect the curfew now because you can see people driving around all hours of the night, but if you restrict the places where they could go it would limit the exposure to the virus.”
