A 23-year-old man who admitted attending a get-together earlier this year in violation of the COVID-19 Emergency Powers Orders was yesterday fined $350.

Police arrested Arlingtino Wilmott after they found him at a gambling game in a Robinson Road home on February 8.

He initially denied the allegations, but changed his plea to guilty when his trial opened before Magistrate Samuel McKinney.

Sergeant 2382 Jeffery Canter said that around 7.46pm on the evening in question, he and a team of officers went to a building opposite Super Value’s Robinson Road location. He said when they went inside, they “met males and females in a room engaged in a gambling game”.

Sgt Canter said he then approached the group and informed them they would be cited for attending a social gathering. He said when he asked Wilmott to produce a form of identification, the accused was unable to do so.

The officer said Wilmott was then informed he would be cited for leaving his residence without a government issued ID.

Yesterday, Wilmott was represented by attorney Wendawn Frazier. She said her client was sorry for having started a trial but changed his pleas because he did not want to waste the court’s time.

As a result, Magistrate McKinney fined him $250 for travelling without his ID and another $100 for attending a social gathering. He said if Wilmott failed to pay the fines, he would be convicted and sentenced to a month in custody.
