OLYMPIC gold medalists Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Steven Gardiner were rewarded yesterday with money from a local company.

Michael Dean, CEO of Equity Investment Funds Services, said that Equity was “proud” to welcome the two champions. The company did not specify the amount of the financial gift.

“I had a Gatorade on the side, my heart was racing, and filled with pride,” Mr Dean said about watching their races.

“We would really like to thank Stevie and Shaunae because we really appreciate what they have done for the Bahamian people. Two gold medals from less than half a million people—that is amazing and we just really again thank them for what they have done. We at Equity have always been a part of sports.”

Meanwhile, the Olympic victors were just happy to be back in their home country.

“We went out there and we both represented and we both made history for our country and for ourselves. So it’s good to be back and to see all the smiles on everybody’s faces,” Mr Gardiner said.

For her part, Mrs Miller-Uibo added: “I was just happy to be back home…to be able to celebrate with the Bahamian people. We just thank them for all the support over the years and all the prayers, of course.”

Both Mr Gardiner and Mrs Miller-Uibo clinched victory in the 400m finals at the Tokyo Olympics this summer. “Speedy” Gardiner became the first Bahamian individual male gold medalist while his comrade successfully defended her 400m title.
