A MAGISTRATE yesterday ordered the Department of Social Services to conduct an investigation on a repeat drug offender who admitted struggling with marijuana addiction.

Police arrested Michael Gibson after they found seven grams of Indian hemp on him on August 14.

He pleaded guilty to one count of possession during his arraignment before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle Davis.

The court were told that officers on mobile patrol observed the accused driving west along Windsor Lane. When they beckoned for him to stop, they observed the accused throwing a plastic bag into nearby bushes. The prosecution said when officers asked Gibson what he’d thrown, he replied: “Nothing.”

However, when they took him to the area where he had thrown the object, they found a bag with three foil paper wraps containing marijuana. He was subsequently arrested and “took full responsibility” for the drugs in an interview with police.

During the hearing, Gibson told the magistrate that he had recently found out that he was diagnosed with a serious disease and was “fighting hard with marijuana addiction”.

In response, Magistrate Rolle Davis also noted that the accused was recently convicted for selling drugs and was back before the court for a similar offence after spending time on remand.

He told Gibson “at this point it appeared as if he was not afraid of going to jail”.

As a result, he said he would have the Department of Social Services conduct a report on the accused to see why he was constantly appearing before the courts for the same crime.

He subsequently deferred Gibson’s sentence to September 29 and remanded him into custody until that time.
