NCAA Division II basketball: McCoy, McFall, Bastian in spotlight

MALACHI McCoy earned conference player of the week honours, Jonathan McFall continued his high scoring and Lathaniel Bastian posted another double double in NCAA Division II basketball.

McCoy, the Benedict Tigers’ junior forward, was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) men’s basketball player of the week for his career high double double performance in a win over Tuskegee.

He scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds with one block in the Tigers’ 73-62 win. McCoy had his most efficient shooting game, 8-11 from the field. For the week he averaged 9.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and shot 60 percent from the field.

The Tigers improved to 4-3 with Saturday’s 69-54 win over Claflin in the Paws Up HBCU Classic. McCoy finished with eight points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

McFall surpassed the 20-point mark for the third time this season and his Slippery Rock University have won five of their last six games.

McFall finished with 24 points to lead The Rock to an 83-79 win over Bloomsburg Saturday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover competition.

He shot 11-20 from the field and added eight rebounds.

Slippery Rock improved to 5-2 on the season, 3-0 in the PSAC. In his first season with the programme, McFall is averaging 17.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

Bastian followed up his career high scoring effort on Thursday with his second double double in an Angelo State Rams uniform.

The junior forward finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds in his no.12 Golden Rams 77-75 loss to the Texas A and M-Kingsville Javelinas on Saturday night.

Bastian’s performance Saturday night came off a career high 22 points and eight rebounds in ASU’s 74-71 win over the Texas A and M-International Dustdevils Thursday night.

ASU is 7-1 on the season and Bastian is averaging 12.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.
