A 36-year-old man was put on two years probation yesterday and ordered to compensate police after admitting to making a false report to officers last week.

Police arrested Torriano Smith after he caused the “wasteful employment of police time and resources” by knowingly filing a false complaint to show that an armed robbery had been committed on December 5.

When Smith appeared before Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain yesterday, he pleaded guilty to the offence.

As a result, Magistrate Swain placed him on probation for two years and also ordered him to compensate the Royal Bahamas Police Force $500 for wasting their time.

She warned him that if he failed to be of good behaviour during that time, he would spend three months in prison.

He was also told that failure to compensate the RBPF would result in one-month imprisonment.

Smith is scheduled to return to court February 3 for a review.
