More than 100 migrants held near Inagua

MORE than 100 suspected illegal migrants were picked by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force in waters near Matthew Town, Inagua, last week.

The group of 108 migrants consisted of 87 males, 20 females, and one minor. Ministry of Health officials in Matthew Town examined all of the migrants and determined that they were in good health.

They were subsequently turned over to immigration officials for processing and investigation.

According to a press release from the Department of Immigration, a search of its database revealed that no applications were submitted in respect of any of the migrants in custody, hence, they were all found to have landed illegally in The Bahamas, an offence punishable under Immigration Act Chapter 191.

The group left Inagua for New Providence on Saturday by Bahamasair.

They are expected to appear in the Magistrate’s Court early this week.
