THE University of The Bahamas’ Athletics Department paid a courtesy call on Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Mario Bowleg yesterday.

The UB delegation included director of athletics Kimberley Rolle, vice president of administrative services Dr Marcella Elliot- Ferguson, and assistant director of athletics, Sean Bastian. Minister Bowleg was joined by permanent secretary Eugene Poitier.

The meeting focused on collaborations between UB and the ministry in terms of developing sports in the country and UB Athletics’ plan to move into the (NAIA) National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.“The meeting was very productive as we look for ways to leverage the expertise that we have here at UB Athletics,” Rolle said. “We focused on funding opportunities along with becoming a training ground for the country’s future athletes, coaches and administrators. “We also want the minister to know our plans to move into the NAIA and how the minister and ministry can help in that endeavour.”

Rolle and Bowleg discussed the role UB could play in developing a national sports academy along with increasing the participation of athletic trainers in national team development.

UB Athletics currently competes in cross-country and track and field for men and women along with men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, women’s softball, men and women’s golf, along with men and women’s judo.
